because, basically .05 fits into 1/2 or .5 10 times
divided by means how many times does .05 fit into .5

   .50
 / .05
    10

   .05
 x 10
   .50
how many .05's add up to make a .5

look, whats

  .05               1st
+.05              2nd
+.05              3rd
+.05              4th
+.05              5th
+.05              6th
+.05              7th
+.05              8th
+.05              9th
+.05               10th
 .5 or 1/2

make it easier, 1/2 is the same as .5
and then we have .05

.50            (the zero here just makes this easier)
  /.05
   10
now lets remove the decimal place, which is the period ........
so-

   50
  /05
   10
what is 50 divided by 5
what is 5 divided by 1/2's
what is 500 divided by 50
the decimals dont matter

Okay. Since up there kinda made it really hard to understand...

1/2, okay? It's in fraction form. 0.05 in fraction form is 5/100, or 1/20. See the spaces? Two spaces to the right of the decimal= 100. One space=10, and 3 spaces=1000. Just add a zero for how many spaces there are.

So, 1/2 divided by 1/20 ends up as 1/2 times 20/1 You gotta flip the second fraction when dividing. Simple pre algebra.

So, 1/2 times 20/1 = 20  You multiply straight across. 1 times 20= 10, 2 times 1=2. Then, you simplify. 20/2= 10/1= 10. If you divide 20 and 2 by 2, you get 10 and 1. Then divide both by1 , and you get 10. I just worked it out for you, and explained the steps. XD

nothing is a bigger mind fuck that 0.5/0.05 = 10
i thought it was 0.005 (the question was on a practice test and i chose 0.005)

so basically, i want to make the decimals into whole numbers, and then see how many times one number fits into the other?

i think what doc meant was this(she uses fractions)

      1     /     1
      2    /     20

you flip one now

      1     /     20
      2    /      1

now since one is flipped you multiply instead of dividing

      1    x    20
      2    x     1

and the answer is...

      1     /     20   =  20        or     10
      2    /      1   =   2                     1

or just 20/2

My fractions got messed up. -.- So I said screw it and just revised it to one line. XD

for future math though, its always best to try to use decimals.
in this instance its slightly less brainfucking to divide the fractions but you need to get in the habit of using decimals in this kind of equation for higher level math like calculus. All the ways you are taught to do math is for a reason, it builds on itself. Top percentile in math and i almost died in AP Chemistry 2 in highschool because i learned all the math 'my own way' and got screwed trying to do two page long equations with my 'own formula'
