Lest we forget
« on: November 11, 2010, 01:33:39 PM »
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

So I was up last night and ended up on this subject, I started doing some mental math but try wrapping your mind around these numbers.
1,194,198 american soldiers have died in service since the start of this country, roughly half of them in the past 65 years. It would take 13 days, 19 hours, 43 minutes and 18 seconds to kill that many people if you killed one a second, every second, without break. It would take an average AK-47 firing at FULL cyclic rate(600 rounds per minute) 1 day, 9 hours, 10 minutes and 20 seconds to fire this many rounds, assuming that somehow each bullet wound fataly wound a seperate person without wasting two bullets on any one person(imagine trying to aim and hit 10 different people every second. Also consider that no magazine holds 1.2 MILLION rounds so you would have to reload and the gun would catch fire/melt somewhere between 30 to 60 seconds of full auto firing.
Assuming a 75 year life expectancy on the average us citizen, there are about 657,456 hours in a normal persons life, so... If every single dead US serviceman's life translated into one hour of time the total of all servicemen KIA would equal 136 years of total time. This means that that the United States Of America has been sacrificing soldiers at a rate of roughly 1 soldier every 1 hour and 43 minutes

So on average a US soldier is killed every hour and 43 minutes since the founding of this country

I thought it might be interesting to post this topic since most of us live in the USA, and I assume that yall grossly underestimate or underappreciate how much is given for this country just as much as I do. Big numbers are kinda hard to wrap the human mind around and actually fathom. If yall find any interesting math related to this subject please feel free to add it
Thank You to those who have sacrificed

So yesterday at work, i was in at 10:00 am, and at 11:00 am, we all stopped what we were doing, as the Flander's Field poem was recited. Although it was rememberance day, and you are supposed to stop all actions for one minute at 11:00, it was pretty upsetting to see some people still expecting some service. I work in a Hardware Store, and the manager got on the PA system and all, and asked everyone to stop, yet some douches still didnt get the message.

some people don't really give a shit...and it's those kind of people that usually end up getting their asses kicked in the parking lot of the place they were in at the time.
