What i don't get is how despite how foreseeable an incident like this is there's no contigency fund or plan that was already in place for these types of events. I mean....EVERYONE should know that an oil spill can and will happen at some point....so why wasnt anyone ready for it? SLACKERS! xD

What do you expect us to do in preparation? Have hundreds of vessels with the capability to clean up masses amount of oil with thousands of trained crew members on hand like minutemen? We don't have the money to pay for anything like that. There was basically nothing we could do to prepare for an oil spill as large as this one.

ok firstly all i can do is complain. i CANT get off my ass and go work. i CANT drive to the gulf and go work. y u may ask? IM A MINOR. all i can do is watch helplessly while everything goes downhill. it's like being in the backseat of a car that is speeding thru traffic the wrong way. ur scared shitless but all u can do is watch and trust that the ppl that can help will. u can tell the person driving that they are being and idiot and need to do something better, but otherwise u are fucked

Okay. Just so everyone knows, it is not a few hundred gallons every hour. Just last week it was at over 750 gallons per MINUTE. Now you can say that oil spills were going to happen, and you're right. But the thing is, BP was warned of this. They had MULTIPLE violations pointed ot at them by engineers. They ignored these warnings. Why? Because it would push everything back too far and cost them money. Money... which is what oil companies seem to never have enough of. So they ignored these warnings thinking they were infallible... and then this happens. They are not infallible. They made a massive mistake and now we have to pay for it. Should we have been ready for it? Sure. But how? When we can think up of a plan that we can AFFORD and can be effective then I'm sure we'll do it. But there's a hell of a lot ocean out there and the economy isn't up to it. As for the video I couldn't bring myself to press play after seeing the title. I can see a human suffer and it won't bother me nearly as much as seeing an animal suffer. We aren't any better than any other animal. Thinking we are is a horrible mistake. We aren't any better just because we have computers and thumbs... Ever see another animal destroy its own habitat because it wants more land to show off or more money to use? Ever see another animal become fixated with something like currency? We create things that aren't even necessary and then insist that we can't live without them. We aren't superior. We're just flawed enough and egocentric enough to think that we are.

and yes you could stop the car theres an e brake for a reason even if you cant reach it theres keys you can remove if you cant do that put it in neutral

lol, i know this is getting off on a tangent but using the e brake to stop a "speeding car" would have violent results. Most drivers wouldnt be able to safely control the vehicle in that scenario, especially if a passenger engaged the emergency brake without their knowledge

but maybe you could go fishing and FedEx everything you catch to the gulf, maybe freshwater fish will thrive in oily saltwater XD

dam...went up i guess...i'd heard it was gallons per hour just a week or so ago...so yea that's pretty bad considering oil sits on top of water and spreads...and its more than just oil leaking...yes bp was warned before any of this happened and could have stopped it if they wanted to...that's documented fact...they were getting super high methane readings at the well that blew up way b4 it did

so not only is it large amounts of oil being spewed into the gulf (it wont stop there it will spread...there's no way to "contain" it)...but methane into the atmosphere as well...not to mention the huge amounts of carbon from the oil that's been burned

for any1 saying...it can be fixed...or go clean it up...or hey ur worried for nothing..or just generally acting like you dont give a shit...i want you to try this experiment

take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water...pour 1 quart of motor oil into it (much more refined than crude oil btw...keep that in mind) and then i want you to clean that 5 gallons of water...no oil...and 5min into your process i will walk up and dump another quart of oil into your already polluted bucket...5min later...again...etc etc...good luck
