nVidia or Radeon :|

The question says it all.

Next year after my conf, I will be upgrading my computer.
Those are the components I will upgrade: Processor, Graphic card, Power supply, Motherboard, More fans. (I currently have no fans, just the ones for my Processor, PCU and GPU.)

I am confused, I currently have a Gainward 9800GT 1gb (nVidia) and it's beginning to get a little old.. It run CoD MW2 on full graphics but with a little lagg when entering a spot with a lot of smoke.

I have been looking at Radeon HD cards, thought about buying a HD5770 1GB or a HD5870.

If you have any idea what card I should get, please tell me in a comment ;D

I am going to use the computer for gaming, video editing, manipulating and chit chatting on Steam, xFire and MSN :)

I voted I have no idea :|

The reason I put this in PC gaming directory is because I am going to use the computer mainly as a gaming computer.

tbh, the smoke isn't the graphics card because I have a 1g 9800 gt on a pc next to me that doesn't get lag in smoke..
it has a caore i7 and 6 gigs of dd3 so I am thinking you need more/better/higher quality ram... or processor upgrade.

Yeah, Tbh I knew it was the processor cause it has nothing to be with the graphic card :|
I just didn't remember it xD

nvidia isnt better nor is ati

its all dependant first of all
and second of all its too large a time gap for us to give  you a reasonably statistical response
but atm the 5870 would be your best bet

later on it wont be though

Easy choice.

Gamer= Nvidia
Animations/Cad= Nvidia
Photoshop=ATI
HD Movies= ATI

Light end use = Either

NVidia is also good for Photoshop.

It is but ATI renders more detail. The only issue with ATI is does not do a super great job at solid clean fluid moving pictures.

it does? I never noticed the difference...I mean, the computers at the school I went to had ATI in some of the computers and NVidia cards in the rest. I tried using one comp with the ATI card in it, and the comp next to it had an NVidia card. tried 'em both out, and didn't even see a difference in detail. although when it comes to rendering, I do have to say that ATI does it a little quicker, but I'm not sure if that has to do with the card or not.

I have before back when i used to do photoshop I notice a big difference in detail and crispness.

Shadow you may not notice a difference with your eyes but i bet there is a small lag. Though last time i used ATI you could tell now since AMD owns them they might have improved a lot more.

to be honest you can get a dx 11 card from ati for much cheaper than you can with nVidia.. but then again this relates back to the whole intel vs amd thing as well...

intel is to nVidia (Meaning higher price but more stable and more resilient vs things like heat)
as
amd is to ati (Less stable but if you find a decent card they are rock solid...JUST DON'T GET IT HOT)

Well I have Nvidia 9800GS 512MB & I haven't had any problems with it yet.
That was one of the specs I was looking for when I got this laptop cause people told me Nvidia was a good graphics card for gamers.

I really like the ATI HD series. My Radeon 4750 HD M has performed amazingly so far.
