Websites protesting SOPA
« on: January 18, 2012, 04:55:24 AM »
I went to google today and noticed that the google was covered by a black bar.
If you roll over the bar it says 'Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!'

Also wikipedia's english site is down to protest web censorship.

Nice to see huge websites fighting an unjust bill.

google wasnt hacked...they're part of the protest...it's the largest protest in US history...most of the major sites are protesting SOPA ... if that bill goes through our internet will be much like China's ... we'd only get to view sites that are on the government's ''approved'' list ... which eventually would only equal a few hundred (that's what is proposed in the 'Internet 2.0' concepts anyway) ... as opposed to the hundreds of  thousands available now

Edit - infact it's possible sites like this one might not make the ''approved list'' ... for instance let's say someone posted a video that contained copyrighted material (even if it's not actually copyrighted..someone simply filing a claim that it is...could cause problems)... under that bill ... this site could be accused of facilitating piracy ... and would be blacklisted ... or "blacked out" which is the purpose of the current major site blackouts .. google.. wiki .. etc

In this link you can find 40 companies that are opposing SOPA, some pretty powerful names too.

And also, you should really watch this video by totalbiscuit if you havent already

Like AMURICA doesn't have enough protestors. Occupy wall street is going on, and to think that a huge amount of americans use and surf the web. If the government cant stop illegal sites in my opinion thats their problem. why should we be penalized? I dont think they know how much the internet applies to the average american.
When in doubt, Fist pump it out

I believe it was originated by a representative, Lamar Smith. I'd look up the information to confirm it, but all the major websites I use to get my information to confirm this are blacked out! LOL  >:( :o

Also, I would like to see everyone rage against PIPA or the protect ip act as well because it's equally, if not MORE harmful than SOPA!! Both of these bills MUST be stopped. Frankly, I'm going to be voting against my congressman/representative if they have been shown to support this bill. It does not even matter if they started out and then turned against them...if they showed support AT ALL at ANY time, I'm voting for someone else.

Well I found THAT gem....but yeerr....I think you may also be right. It wasn't just ONE person, but all the news I've heard up to this point heavily condemns Harry Reid and Lamar Smith. But really, it's Hollywood and the like who are the most involved with this monstrosity.

Yeah...exactly what dustalk said. Could not have phrased what is happening better. (In fact, that's one of the best summations of what this bullshit is I've read to date! CHEERS!)

[rant]

it's mainly the lawyers and hollywood/music exec's (not actual actors/artists/creative ppl etc) that stand to gain from this ... and in turn politicians they pay off to support it .. most of the ppl voting on it are from a generation that still think the internet ''is a series of tubes'' anyway .. so they have no idea how much it effects .. what they do understand however ... is a loss of support and voters ;) nothing hurts a politician quite as much

sadly the problem is enough money can make them forget that ...

as with any bill that passes through ... it's overloaded with 'pork' ... 'online piracy' is a current buzz phrase .. so they figure by attaching various things to a bill supposedly against it ... it'll be easier to pass things through that'd normally be much more difficult or wouldnt stand at all on their own ... it's how they've done things for years and it's about time it stopped

SOPA and PIPA basicly give the government the right to make the blanket statement ''you cant visit that site...because we say so...reason? we dont have to give you a reason.''

even posting lyrics to a song could fall under piracy of intellectual property or copyrighted material...or posting an image found on a google search...this bill is what i refer to as a ''shotgun approach'' ... put enough lead in the air and ur bound to hit something...it's all written in very broad and generalized terms that leave it highly open for interpretation and modification and that's not good at all
